1 World Flight Club Outreach Program.
There is no requirement for members to participate in our outreach program, however 1WFC attracts many members who have a commitment to giving back to the community. We believe that aviation volunteerism helps to keep pilots interested in flying, and serves as an incentive to stay proficient. At the organizational level 1WFC has a strong commitment to bringing new faces from many diverse backgrounds into aviation. 1WFC seeks to encourage and support those who have the desire to get involved in aviation, but for who may find this goal is just beyond their reach. We hope that 1WFC members can help to push those prospective pilots towards success and towards realizing their dreams. 1WFC seeks to accomplish this through mentoring. Towards these ends, 1WFC seeks various types of volunteers. Such volunteers may not necessarily become dues paying pilots with flight reservation privileges, but may become sympathetic Administrative Members who participate solely in our outreach activities. The following are examples of needed volunteers: AVIATION PRESENTER: The Presenter visits nearby high schools and presents to targeted populations regarding personal and professional opportunities in flying and any relevant perspectives the volunteer brings. The Presenter answers the audiences questions and finally provides a quiz on their talk. The Presenter evaluates the written results and selects the most motivated audience members. Professional aviation backgrounds are a plus, but enthusiasm and comfort with presenting the material are most important. DISCOVERY PILOT: A volunteer pilot provides a short free flight to those candidates selected by Presenters. A Flight Instructor certificate is a plus as this allows the student to come on the controls, however, any pilot certificate is appreciated to simply give a young person the opportunity to get upstairs, observe, and experience something new. GROUND INSTRUCTOR: Volunteers will prepare Mentorees who have completed Discovery flights for further training in our Flight Simulator Program. Volunteers do not need to be Flight Instructors, however they should be comfortable explaining basic aviation concepts to a small audience. This may require some brushing up on theory. Topics to be covered are 1) aerodynamics and aircraft controls, 2) engine systems and instrument systems, 3) navigation theory and chart usage, and 4) internet weather services use. Ground Instructors will first pass a oral exam given by our resident flight instructors. FLIGHT SIMULATOR TRAINER: After mentorees have completed our Ground School, volunteers meet with one mentoree once to four times a month to fly with a youngster on a PC using a program such as microsoft flight simulator. The volunteer will cover the following basic sylabus: 1) cockpit layout and functions of items in the cockpit, 2) how to operate the simulator, 3) takeoff, climbs, cruise, level turns, descents, 4) steep turns, slow flight, power off and on stalls, 5) emergency procedures, 6) radio navigation and flight by reference to instruments, 7) Instrument approaches. Instrument rated pilots are sought to provide item 7. Simulator Trainer Volunteers will receive a basic instructor training from our resident flight instructors. Upon completion of our flight orientation program the candidate can be referred to other aviation resources such as the Summer Flight Academy organized by the Black Pilots of America which sponsors one candidate from each chapter to receive a preset number of flight training hours. Other candidates will develop relationships with their mentors that will allow them to begin training sooner, and complete the training in less total time, and with less expense. |
